75-inch entertainment center

I replace a 70-inch Sharp LCD with a 75-inch Vizio PX75-G1. The Sharp only lasted 4 years. pdf version

In 2016 I put two TVs into my 70-inch entertainment center. Both screens can serve as a dual-monitor setup for my laptop. I can also receive broadcast TV on the top screen, it's hooked to antenna. The bottom screen was a Sharp LC- 70SQ15U 1080 TV I paid B&H Photo $1,595 in February of 2016. The top TV is a.Sharp LC- 70UH30U 4K costing $2,229    from Amazon via the great site RTINGS.com. I used RTINGS again to determine that a Vizio PX75-G1 would be ideal as a computer monitor, and it would still fit the cabinet I built. I picked one up from Costco for $1784 plus a 60-dollar membership. Above, the top screen is Internet Explorer playing a web show, with the Titan TV listings on a Firefox window on the new 75-inch screen. Using a far screen slows down nearsightedness.

You can see how much brighter and whiter the Vizio is compared to the old Sharp.

Here is the dying Sharp. I had turned up the brightness to use as a monitor, the LEDs died.

The old Sharp was tinted. The killer is a column of dead pixels 5 inches from the right edge.

Since I fall asleep in front of the screens so often, I just slipped a queen-sized bed under.

I used boxes to lower the right side down.

Then I could ease the left side down onto a box.

That let me twist the TV and drop it on the bed.

I get the mount removed, ready to relocate.

I didn't need a TV to distract me so I switched the top TV to computer, which has gone to sleep by the time I took this picture.

Here is the mount at the new location. I did a lot of figuring to reduce the gap between the screens. A jigsaw enlarged the plywood holes.

I fired up the old TV, so I could convince the Costo deliverymen to take it home.

I checked out the Vizio before mounting it.

As well as the model number.

I had to use a 13-dollar VGA to HDMI converter from my laptop to drive the screen. The converter is powered from a USB port and works OK. The pandemic is just starting

The new TV had different mounting points, so I had to move the mount again.

I screwed some boards above the top TV, and ran rope over the boards to pull up the TV.

It's hooked in on the left, and I am getting up and over to hook onto the right mount.

I slipped out the 4-inch conduit in the back for access to the mounting screws and cables.

The gap is perfect, it took a few trys and some elongated holes.

The Titan TV schedule was never brighter,. bigger, or better color. What joy vs the Sharp.

2020-03-19_75-inch-entertainment-center_23The new screen is working fine, and is a pleasure to use compared to the old Sharp. I might have lived with the screen LEDs dying, but the dead pixels are a real annoyance when you are doing CAD work or spreadsheets or anything with linear content.

My mechanical engineer buddy Dave Ruigh was the guy that showed me how nice it is to have the screen a few feet away. Over a decade ago he mounted a 54-inch Samsung a few feet from his desk. He pointed out he did need to use his reading glasses when working.

I soon realized that keeping your screens further away also means your eyesight does not deteriorate as fast. If you only focus two feet away, you eye muscles atrophy and you ether become nearsighted, or you need a stronger prescriptions than you would otherwise.

One problem I faced was none of the modern TVs take VGA anymore. So I was delighted to see Amazon had converter boxes for 13 bucks, so I could send HDMI to the new Vizio. It is a little troublesome. Sometimes the connector shifts, my laptop does not have screws next to the connector, and I lose red until I wiggle the thing. A few times I have had to cycle power by yanking the USB and re-plugging, but overall, the converter has worked great.
